Eva

I started reading Zora’s diary almost as soon as I got home last night, and didn’t finish going over everything until almost four AM. She had a stream-of-consciousness style of journaling, so deciphering what she was writing about wasn’t easy. But I think I managed to, for the most part. As well as anyone who didn’t know her and her thoughts intimately might, anyway.

My alarm’s shrill beeping woke me at seven AM, but I couldn’t actually get out of bed until past eight. Not the most professional way to start the day, but after I read Mark’s text that he was meeting Ida to go check out the autopsy findings, I didn’t much care about professionalism at all.

I’m still in a sour mood now, as I drink my second cup of coffee at the glass table in the office. It’s too strong and bitter since I made it myself and I’m terrible at making anything other than instant coffee. As a result, it’s not doing wonders for my stomach or waking me up very effectively. It’s almost ten and Mark is still not back.

“Eva, can you come into my office,” Simon says from the doorway of it.

I nodded hello to him when I walked in, and then went straight for the coffee, but I guess I can’t exactly say no to him now, since he asked so directly. Sighing, I pick up my coffee and stand up.

He closes the door behind me as soon as I’m in his office.

“I was thinking,” he says as he walks to his desk. “Maybe Mark doesn’t have to know how badly we messed up last night. I mean, he’ll find out eventually, when he speaks to that hippie dude.”

I narrow my eyes at him and take a seat in one of the two leather chairs facing his desk. It’s cold and too hard, even though it’s padded.

“No,” I say and take a sip of my coffee, regretting it instantly.

Simon grins sheepishly. “No, we don’t have to tell him?”

“We’re going to tell him as soon as he gets in, and we’re going to apologize,” I clarify. “And then we’ll hope you’re right and no serious damage was done. Apart from the fact that—”

The main office door buzzes open and Mark walks in alone, carrying two dark brown evidence boxes, one balanced on top of the other.

I set down my coffee and go help him on impulse, and not because his eyes darted to me sharply as soon as he saw me sitting in Simon’s office. That look definitely meant something, but I have no idea what.

“There’s one more in the car,” he says as I prop open the door for him. I reach for the top box, but he assures me he’s got it and takes them to the glass table.

“This is the evidence in the Ana Kobe case,” he says and rushes out of the office to get the third box.

“He doesn’t look in the best of moods,” Simon says as he walks over. “Maybe the autopsy didn’t go well.
